The most painful state of being

March 29, 2010 at 11:44 pm (Uncategorized)

The most painful state of being is remembering the future.

Thinking of what your life could have been like if you had never gotten your disability.

Thinking of the friend you lost contact with.

Thinking of how you could have been with your love if only one of you hadn’t screwed it up. Comparing your life with your new love to what it might have been with your old love.

Thinking of your life if you’d had kids, or hadn’t had them.

Thinking of what might have happened if you’d studied for that test, got into your college of choice, chosen the other major.

Wanting to be with a friend who will probably never come back.

How things might have been…

Do not waste your tears on this. Do not spend your time remembering the future. It is too late. You should concentrate on the life you have now, the friends you have now, and treasure the good things that are actually yours.

Still. Easier said than done, isn’t it?

The most painful state of being is remembering the future.

The what could have been haunts me everyday. I think all of us have a few pivotal days where if we had just gone left instead of right then we would have completely different lives today. For me, I try to remember that I like who I am today and if I had made different decisions that person would not exist.

*nodnod* I think that’s a really great practical antidote to the funk that remembering the future can land us in.
